Dr. Avenelle “Avey” TurnerAnyone who follows CLEAR knows Dr. Avenelle “Avey” Turner form My Friend: Standing Strong and from her amazing Canine Cancer Pop Up Talks! She’s brilliant, funny, compassionate, and always puts owners at ease. We love her to the moon and back! Which is why we are so excited that she has agreed to moderate our post-film panel discussion! For those who haven’t yet met Avey…read on! She’s amazing!
Avey graduated from the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (CSU CVMBS) in Fort Collins in 2000 and completed her residency in medical oncology at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists in 2004. She completed board certification and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 2005. While at Veterinary Cancer Group, (where we met her) she was the lead investigator of multiple clinical trials. Her professional experience includes authoring numerous publications and manuscripts as well as serving as an advocate for veterinary professionals and pet owners. She’s a proud pet Mom to Sookie, Romo, Gilligan and Dill Pickle. |
Dr. Jeffrey BryanWe immediately fell in love with Dr. Bryan and we know you will too! Not to play favourites, but a certain director says he was her favourite interview.
Jeffrey Bryan, DVM, MS, PhD, DACVIM-Oncology Professor, Oncology A graduate of the University of California, Davis (BS, DVM), and the University of Missouri (MS, PhD), Jeffrey Bryan completed specialty training at MU. He joined the MU faculty in 2011. His research interests include epigenetics of cancer; targeted imaging and therapy; epidemiology of cancer. Clinical interests: novel therapy for lymphoma; targeted radiopharmaceutical imaging and therapy; immunotherapy of cancer. PLUS he’s a talented musician. |
David BruyetteWithout Dr. Bruyette, we’d be lost! He is a huge CLEAR supporter who kindly introduced us to Dr. Amy LeBlanc at the NIH. More importantly he very patiently has helped Terry and Stacey understand science that would otherwise be WAY over their heads!
Dr. David Bruyette received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Missouri. Subsequently, he completed an internship at Purdue University and residency in internal medicine at the University of California-Davis. He was a staff internist at the West Los Angeles Veterinary Medical Group and a member of the Department of Comparative Medicine at Stanford University. Dr. Bruyette was an Assistant Professor and Head of Internal Medicine at Kansas State University and Director of the Analytical Chemistry Laboratory at Kansas State. Dr. Bruyette was Medical Director of the VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital, one of the largest 24-hour emergency/specialty practices in the country. Dr. Bruyette is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and a member of the Pituitary and Endocrine Societies. He is currently the Chief Medical Officer at Anivive Lifesciences. |
Dr. Timothy FanDr. Fan is an incredibly gifted doctor and researcher. He is also incredily kind. You can feel his kindness when you are in his presense which struck us while interviewing him. And to say he is brilliant is an understatement.
Dr. Fan received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree at Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 1995. He completed a Small Animal Rotating Internship at the University of Illinois in 1996, a Small Animal Internal Medicine Residency at Cornell University in 1998, and a Medical Oncology Fellowship at the University of Illinois in 2000. Fan completed a Ph.D. in Tumor Immunology in 2007, where he investigated the anticancer effects of cytokine manipulation strategies. Dr. Fan is a professor of Veterinary Clinical Medicine at University of Illinois and serves as the principal investigator of the Comparative Oncology Research Laboratory. He is also a core member of the Anticancer Discovery from Pets to People theme at the Carl Woese Institute for Genomic Biology. |
Dr Julie Bulman-FlemingWhen we spoke with her patients, they raved about Dr Julie! Once we met her we understood why they love her so much! She was so incredibly nice and extemely informative!
Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Dr. Julie Bulman-Fleming attended the University of British Columbia for her bachelor's degree in animal biology. Next it was on to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan where she attended the Western College of Veterinary Medicine and developed her interest in oncology. After graduating in 2007 with her DVM degree with great distinction, she moved east across Canada and did a rotating internship in small animal medicine, surgery and critical /emergency care. Dr. Bulman-Fleming crossed the border back to the West Coast and joined Veterinary Cancer Group as a medical oncology resident in August 2008. She completed the three-year program in early August 2011. Dr. Bulman-Fleming had fulfilled the requirements of the board certification one month earlier by passing her examination with the ACVIM and as such was awarded diplomate status in medical oncology. Her areas of interest include client education, palliative care and the role of the immune system in cancer development and treatment. Julie's personal interests are rock climbing, mountain biking, snow boarding and travel. |
Jaque YoungJacque is the bomb! It is evident that she loves her patients and her patient’s families. She is a true asset to Davis and we are thrilled that she agreed to come down South to be a part of the panel!
Jacque worked with the oncology service for 19 years after spending 7 years in general practice. Jacque came to the Veterinary Center for Clinical Trials in October 2019 where she is responsible for coordinating oncology clinical trials. Her favourite part of the job is the connection she develops with patients while going through treatment with them. Jacque enjoys spending time with her two rat terriers, and her two cats. She is also an avid fisherwoman and scuba diver. |
